The date was April 14, 2012. The venue was The Sweet Shop in downtown Greensboro. And the hostess was Outspoken Fire.
With a new book about to be “birthed”, I decided that I needed to start PARTICIPATING in more poetry, open mic and spoken word events. A lover of poetry, I attend on a regular basis but I don’t participate. I’ve read a few times before from “HIGH On Love & Addiction” and a performed a piece at a Whitney Houston tribute but I hadn’t memorized anything to recite. That was my goal. I wanted to participate in at least one event each month and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. I was comfortable with the venue as it is one of my favorite places downtown, so it feels a bit like home. There was a modest amount of attendees and I didn’t want to put my name on the list. With two of my friends by my side, I took the plunge and wrote down my “stage name”…Joyful Noize. When my name was called, I walked up to the stage and recited “First Love”. My voice shook and my stomach felt as if I were on a roller coaster, but I got through it. I realized my obstacles. 1. Being on a stage and above everyone. 2. not having a piece of paper to “protect” me from the crowd. But, I overcame them both. I’m ready for at least seven more performances.
